2018/11/02
Our current exhibit at Anjin cafe in Daikanayama T-site is featuring on the relationship between text and image. Since this cafe space opened toward the end of 2012, it has attracted many guests with its collection of backnumber mgazines in cultural field.
Playfulness or decorativeness long cherished in Japanese culture or art is still alive in some of the contemporary art, and it is this character that we would like to present in this exhibit Crossword through books and letters.
Some artists handle letters or alphabets to generate new meaning with different materials such as Japanese coins or maps. The newly created image can be read as a symbolic phrases of peace or war, or even Buddhist sutra. Others tries to alter the form of books through folding each pages or pasted the pages with resin to make it appear like sculpture. The printed "I" by drypoint onto a hand mirror in various language will reflect the society we are living. The generation as well as used materials range largly to show the continuous interest on the side of artists in creating the world of crosswords-letter and image today.
